Independently researched rankings of the best detox wellness resorts and detox retreats, from the Himalayan foothills to the Tyrolean Alps, judged on care, food and honesty.

Unveil the treasured sanctuaries of detox wellness resorts, where clean food, mountain air, movement and expert care give body and mind a genuine reset. Our team reviews each retreat carefully, reading the resorts' own programme pages rather than what others say about them, and focuses on wellness criteria that blend traditional and modern practice into a stay you will feel long after you leave.
We see through the online noise with laser-focused clarity, allowing you to enjoy your best wellness journey effortlessly. Here you will find the world's top detox retreats in one place, with every detox treatment explained, from juice cleanses and Mayr cures to Ayurvedic detox, colonics, drips and heavy metal tests.
A detox retreat promises to clear out what modern life puts in: alcohol, sugar, ultra-processed food, late nights and stress. The honest version of that promise is a good one. A week or more of light, fresh food, no alcohol or cigarettes, early nights, daily walks and expert guidance leaves most people feeling clearer, lighter and better rested. The science is plainer than the marketing. Your liver, kidneys, lungs, gut and skin remove waste every day, and no detox programme has been shown to speed that up; a 2015 review of detox diets found no compelling evidence that they remove toxins or bring lasting weight loss, and the US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health notes that the few studies are of low quality. What a good retreat can do is give those organs a break and help you build habits that last. This guide ranks detox wellness resorts on exactly that: specialist programmes with longer stays, medical or qualified supervision, real food, movement, rest and follow-up, and it names every colonic, purge, drip and unvalidated test rather than repeating claims that they flush out toxins.
With so many accommodations on the wellness bandwagon these days, true independent, thorough, specialized data is more important than ever. Almost every spa now sells a detox, and many detox programmes are built on daily colonics, vitamin drips, foot baths that turn the water brown and tests that do not measure what they claim. We searched across Europe, Asia, the Americas, Oceania and the Middle East, opened the resorts' own detox programme pages, and kept only genuine resorts whose detox rests on what actually helps: qualified supervision, real food, movement, sleep and a plan for home. Specialists come first: the Ayurvedic Panchakarma houses, the Mayr houses and the leading medical fasting clinic, with stays of one to five weeks, rank above short detox weeks at general resorts. We left out every programme with drips or ozone built into it and every resort that markets stories of cures, flag every purge, enema and supplement on its card, and checked that each programme is running now.
Detox programmes combine many treatments. Here is what the common ones involve, where you will meet them on this page, and what the evidence says. For the bigger picture of healthy ageing, see our longevity and cellular regeneration guide.
Heavy metal detox programmes are sold at resorts from Thailand to Italy, usually with a test on arrival and a promise to draw out lead, mercury and other metals. We searched hard for one we could recommend, in many languages and on every continent, and found none that uses a valid test or names the doctor in charge. None of the six detox resorts on this page offers metal testing or metal removal as part of its programme. Genuine exposure is measured with a blood test for lead, or a 24-hour urine test for mercury and some other metals, ordered by your own doctor. The tests sold at resorts are a different matter: "provoked" urine tests, taken after a chelating drug, have not been scientifically validated and may be harmful, according to the American College of Medical Toxicology, and hair analysis and handheld scanners do not reliably measure what is in your body. Chelation drugs given as a detox have killed patients. If you are worried about metals from your work, your water, old dental fillings or a supplement, ask your doctor for the right test before booking any heavy metal detox.
A parasite cleanse, usually herbal supplements taken alongside colonics, is offered by a handful of detox retreats, without a test and often without a named supervisor. We found none we could recommend. Gut parasites are real, especially after travel in some regions, and they are diagnosed from stool samples, ideally three or more collected on separate days, sometimes with blood tests; infections are treated with medicine chosen for the specific parasite. If you have lasting diarrhoea, cramps or unexplained weight loss, see a doctor rather than booking a parasite detox.
Welcome to the restoring world of detox wellness resorts, where a week or more of simple food, fresh air and expert care can reset how you eat, sleep and feel. On a Himalayan palace estate, Ayurvedic doctors guide a detox programme of therapies, yoga and mountain walks; in a park in a side valley of the Moselle, a hotel given over wholly to Ayurveda runs Panchakarma cures of nine nights to nearly five weeks. Above Innsbruck and on the shore of the Wörthersee, three great Mayr houses teach the art of eating slowly under a doctor's eye, and on a hillside above Lake Constance the house that carries on Dr Otto Buchinger's method guides a medically supervised fast of ten nights to four weeks. One shared aim runs through them all: to send you home lighter, rested and with habits worth keeping.
Type: Holistic Detox and Panchakarma Programmes
Address: The Palace Estate, Narendra Nagar, Tehri Garhwal, Uttarakhand 249175, India
Stay options: Holistic Detox, 7, 14 or 21 nights at Comprehensive or Intensive level; Panchakarma, 21 nights
What the detox is designed for: cleansing the digestive system, improving assimilation, metabolism and circulation, then restoring nutrients, in the resort's description; it calls the programme ideal for slow metabolism and digestive concerns, among others.
Ananda opened in 2000 on the palace estate of the Maharaja of Tehri Garhwal at Narendra Nagar, above Rishikesh and the Ganges valley, and is one of the world's most respected Ayurvedic resorts. Its Holistic Detox begins with a pre-arrival consultation and diet and lifestyle guidance, then a Lead Consultant sees you on arrival, at progress checks and before departure, with a follow-up consultation after you leave. In between come Ayurvedic and other therapies (11 to 33 therapy hours at Comprehensive level, 18 to 53 at Intensive), three to ten personal sessions of yoga, pranayama, meditation or fitness, daily steam, sauna, plunge pool and Kneipp foot bath, Vedanta talks, weekly cooking demonstrations and treks, and a menu planned to your constitution. For a longer cleanse, its 21-night Panchakarma follows three stages, with 34 or 54 therapy hours, nine personal sessions and the same consultations before, during and after the stay.
Ayurvedic doctors monitor the programme and adjust treatments to your response, and the follow-up helps new habits last. The Holistic Detox relies on Ayurvedic Shodhana and yogic cleansing practices that the page does not name, and the Panchakarma page names induced vomiting, purgation, enemas and nasal cleansing (see the medical procedures section above), so ask exactly which are planned; the resort's claims about toxins and the liver are not ones we repeat.
Programme rates are published separately; ask the resort for current rates.

Type: Panchakarma Programme
Address: Wildbadstraße 201-207, 56841 Traben-Trarbach, Germany; +49 6541 7050
Stay options: Compact Panchakarma 9 nights, Classic 13, Intensive 20 or Ultimate 34; Langhana programme 11 nights
What the programme is designed for: in the resort's words, a Panchakarma cure to "harmonize body, mind, and soul", bringing stress relief, more energy and "a fresh start for a healthier lifestyle".
Ayurveda Parkschlösschen stands in its own park in a side valley of the Moselle near Traben-Trarbach, and since the early 1990s has been a hotel given over wholly to Ayurveda: it takes only guests on an Ayurveda programme, and women are treated only by women and men only by men. Every programme brings an initial Ayurvedic assessment, an individual therapy plan, regular interim consultations, nutrition and lifestyle counselling, daily yoga, meditation and lectures, and the Veda Thermal Baths, with a thermal pool and bio, infrared and Finnish saunas. The 13-night Classic Panchakarma adds eight synchronous massages, given by two therapists at once, and nine special treatments, among them shirodhara, herbal steam and three internal bastis; the 20-night Intensive has six bastis and a nasya treatment among twenty, and the 34-night Ultimate adds private yoga, meditation and Ayurveda coaching.
Long stays, a vegetarian, mostly organic kitchen that serves no alcohol or coffee, and prices published for two seasons make this one of the most single-minded Panchakarma houses in Europe. The programme page promises supervision by qualified Ayurvedic physicians, but the team page names Ayurvedic practitioners, one with an Indian Ayurvedic medical degree (BAMS), rather than licensed doctors, so check with your own doctor first if you have a health condition. The bastis are oil and herbal enemas (see the medical procedures section above), no follow-up after departure is listed, and the resort's claims about toxins and the conditions Panchakarma traditionally addresses are not ones we repeat.
The Classic Panchakarma costs €4,090 for the programme plus room and full board from €4,160 per person sharing a double room, for stays until 13 December 2026; from 25 December 2026 it is €4,300 plus from €4,517.50. Compact starts at €3,400 plus from €2,880, Intensive at €6,645 plus from €6,400 and Ultimate at €13,100 plus from €10,880 (2026 prices); visitor's tax is extra.
Type: Modern Mayr Detox Programme
Address: Igler Straße 51, 6080 Innsbruck-Igls, Austria; +43 512 377305
Stay options: Detox Classic, length agreed with the resort; Detox Intensive, two weeks or more recommended
What the detox is designed for: in the resort's words, Detox Classic is "the ideal introduction to Modern Mayr Medicine", and Detox Intensive is "ideal for anyone aiming for optimal health benefits on as broad a basis as possible", which the resort calls its most popular detox programme for long-term weight loss.
Park Igls stands on a sunny plateau about 900 metres up at Igls, above Innsbruck, with the Patscherkofel rising behind; Falstaff's 2027 spa guide, published in September 2026, gives it 92 points and counts forty-four rooms and eight suites. Its detox comes in two levels. Detox Classic brings a holistic health check, a medical examination with manual abdominal treatment, a final examination and five full-body massages; Detox Intensive adds a blood laboratory check, urinalysis, a body composition measurement, a second abdominal treatment, three beeswax detox compresses and a personal training session. Both include daily Kneipp treatments, a personal Modern Mayr diet plan with base broth and herbal tea, group exercise, relaxation, lifestyle and mental coaching, lectures, and the pool, sauna and panoramic gym.
Doctors, a light diet eaten slowly, no alcohol and plenty of movement are the real strengths of a Mayr cure, and Park Igls is the most personal of the leading Mayr houses. No follow-up after the stay is listed, and Mayr cures traditionally use bitter salts, which the detox pages do not mention (see the medical procedures section above); ask before you book. Infusions sold separately by the resort are not part of either detox.
Detox Classic costs from €3,590 and Detox Intensive from €4,286; the resort does not say which length or room these cover, so ask for a quote.

Type: Mayr Gut Health & Detox Programme
Address: Golfstraße 2, 9082 Maria Wörth (Oberdellach), Austria; +43 4273 25110
Stay options: seven days minimum; ten recommended
What the programme is designed for: in the resort's words, "the targeted regeneration of the digestive system and the restoration of a balanced gut microbiome".
The Original Mayr Medical Resort stands on a hill above the southern shore of the Wörthersee in Carinthia and calls itself the founding centre of F.X. Mayr Medicine, marking fifty years since 1976. Its Gut Health & Detox begins with an initial medical examination, a Mayr gut health blood analysis, a metabolic analysis with spirometry, a fitness assessment with a resting lactate test and a body composition measurement, then brings two medical check-ups (three on ten days), urine progress checks and a final examination. Treatments include two or three Original Mayr massages, two therapeutic abdominal massages and three or four herbal detox wraps, with emotional health, diet plan and beauty consultations, and every guest has Mayr cuisine of soup or bouillon, water and teas, inhalations, nasal reflex zone therapy, Kneipp foot baths, lectures, daily group exercise, guided hikes, sauna rituals and, in season, daily relaxation and meditation.
Doctors at every stage, real diagnostics and dietary and exercise recommendations for home make this one of the most complete Mayr detox weeks, at the house where the method began. The programme lists no salts, colonics or drips, but its starter kit includes an alkaline powder and potassium and magnesium supplements, so ask before taking them if you have kidney or heart disease; the alkaline idea has no good evidence. The resort also sells optional Deep Detox and Intensive Weight Loss modules that add an infusion, and in Deep Detox a colon hydrotherapy session; they are not part of the programme we list, and we do not recommend them. Its pages name no doctors.
Gut Health & Detox costs €3,200 for seven days and €4,050 for ten, per person excluding accommodation; medicines and extra medical or therapeutic services are billed separately. The resort's rooms page lists rooms from €280 per person a night, with no dates, so confirm the total when you book.
Type: Lanserhof Classic (Classic Detox)
Address: Kochholzweg 153, 6072 Lans, Austria; +43 512 38666-0
Stay options: 7 to 21 nights, 14 recommended; also at Lanserhof Tegernsee (7 to 16 nights) and Lanserhof Sylt (7 to 21 nights) in Germany
What the detox is designed for: "a genuine reset of the digestive system", in Lanserhof's words, rather than short-term deprivation, in "a medically guided stay built around your health, your needs and the Lanserhof Concept".
Lanserhof Lans sits high above Innsbruck in the Tyrolean Alps, the original house of the Lanserhof group, whose Lanserhof Concept builds on the work of F.X. Mayr. Its Classic programme, which Lanserhof sells as its Classic Detox, brings five medical consultations: a 50-minute initial examination, two check-ups with manual abdominal treatment, a check-up to discuss your findings and a final examination. Alongside come two healing massages, a reflexology session, a detox algae pack and liver wrap, a detox foot bath, a detox drainage session, a body composition measurement, lactate diagnostics and a urine analysis, with a salt therapy and bath listed for stays of nine to eleven nights, a group and training programme, on-call medical cover and the alkaline, easily digestible Energy Cuisine, where you learn to chew slowly and eat mindfully.
Medical care, light food and the discipline of eating slowly are the useful core of this programme, delivered with great polish under the medical director, Dr Katharina Sandtner. The detox foot bath and the salt therapy are not described, so ask what they involve: if the foot bath is an ionic one, it is the device a 2012 study found draws nothing out. The alkaline idea behind the diet has no good evidence, since food does not change the blood's acidity, no follow-up after the stay is listed, and infusions sold separately are not part of this programme.
The programme costs €2,940 for 7 to 8 nights, €3,907 for 9 to 11, €4,909 for 12 to 16 and €6,120 for 17 to 21, per person, excluding accommodation, supplements and medication, plus a mandatory fee of €63 a night for on-call and night medical service (2026 price brochure); rooms start at €350 a night. Its sister houses at Tegernsee and on Sylt appear on our Germany wellness resorts page.

Type: Therapeutic Fasting
Address: Wilhelm-Beck-Str. 27, 88662 Überlingen, Germany; +49 7551 807-0
Stay options: Compact (from 10 nights), Classic Light (from 14), Classic (from 21) and Classic Royal (28); a sister clinic in Marbella, Spain
What the fasting is designed for: medically supervised therapeutic fasting after Dr Otto Buchinger, with "freshly prepared vegetable consommé and fruit juice" as fasting provisions and careful refeeding, in a package that, in the clinic's words, "ideally suits your goals and your available time".
Buchinger Wilhelmi stands high above Lake Constance at Überlingen, with views across the lake to Mainau Island and the Alps, and has carried on Dr Otto Buchinger's fasting method since the clinic opened there in 1953; a sister clinic in the hills above Marbella follows the same method. A fasting stay begins with a digestive rest day of light food, continues with six to twenty-three fasting days on freshly prepared vegetable consommé and fruit juice, and ends with up to four days of gradual refeeding. A doctor examines you on arrival, comprehensive laboratory tests are taken and discussed with you, doctors see you twice a week and a nurse checks your blood pressure, pulse, temperature, weight and girth every morning, with a doctor on call around the clock; between times come daily group exercise and relaxation, a daily liver pack, a therapy voucher of €45 a day towards treatments, and talks on nutrition, medicine and psychology.
Supervised fasting is the safest way to fast for several days, and these are the longest stays on this page, with time to change how you eat; most early weight loss is water, and what lasts depends on how you eat afterwards. Buchinger Wilhelmi sells fasting rather than a programme it calls detox, and it calls itself a clinic, with nursing and an on-call doctor around the clock. At Lake Constance a nurse gives intestinal cleansing every second fasting day, by a method the clinic does not name (see the medical procedures section above), and fasting is a medical intervention, so plan any change to your medicines with your own doctor. The clinic's broader claims about fasting, cleansing and disease are not ones we repeat.
The 2026 price list (operator site) gives, per person for the whole stay in a Standard room, €4,272 for Compact (10 nights), €5,810 for Classic Light (14), €8,295 for Classic (21) and €10,780 for Classic Royal (28), with accommodation, fasting provisions, medical care, laboratory diagnostics, the morning nurse check and the therapy voucher included; the list prints no validity dates, so confirm the price for your dates, and ask the Marbella clinic for its own prices. Ananda spreads across the hundred-acre palace estate of the Maharaja of Tehri Garhwal, high above Rishikesh and the Ganges, with forest walks, a heated pool above the valley and the resort's Rishikesh temple tours, which include the evening Ganga Aarti. Its Holistic Detox and Panchakarma pair Ayurvedic therapies, personal yoga, daily hydrotherapy and a constitution-based menu with a lead consultant who follows up after you leave. Among detox wellness resorts it is the one for an Ayurvedic detox of the highest standard.
Ayurveda Parkschlösschen stands in a large park in a side valley of the Moselle, a five-star house, in its own description, that has taken only Ayurveda guests since the early 1990s. Its Panchakarma cures of nine nights to nearly five weeks pair synchronous massages, shirodhara and internal bastis with daily yoga, a vegetarian kitchen and thermal baths. Among detox wellness resorts it is the one for a classical Panchakarma detox programme without leaving Europe.
Park Igls looks across the Inn valley from the sunny plateau of Igls, a historic health resort village above Innsbruck, with a garden park, an indoor pool and a panoramic gym. Its two detox programmes combine doctors' examinations, abdominal treatments, massages and a light diet eaten slowly with daily exercise and mountain walks. Among detox wellness resorts it is the one for a personal, doctor-led Mayr detox with clear prices.
The Original Mayr Medical Resort looks down on the Wörthersee from its hill at Maria Wörth in Carinthia, where guests swim in the lake in summer and walk in the hills around it. Its Gut Health & Detox pairs doctors' examinations, blood and metabolic tests, abdominal massage and herbal wraps with Mayr cuisine, daily exercise and guided hikes. Among detox wellness resorts it is the one for a thorough Mayr detox at the house where the method began.
Lanserhof Lans, the original Lanserhof, looks out over the Tyrolean Alps from its plateau above Innsbruck, with sister houses at Tegernsee and on Sylt. Its Classic programme pairs five medical consultations and abdominal treatments with massages, wraps, Energy Cuisine and the art of mindful eating. Among detox wellness resorts it is the one for a polished medical detox with a strong medical team.

An Ayurvedic programme with a lead consultant, personal yoga and daily hydrotherapy on a Himalayan palace estate.
Ananda opened in 2000 on the restored palace estate of the Maharaja of Tehri Garhwal at Narendra Nagar, above Rishikesh and the Ganges. Its Holistic Detox, 7, 14 or 21 nights at Comprehensive or Intensive level, aims to cleanse the digestive system, improve assimilation and metabolism and then restore nutrients, with a Wellness Consultant before arrival, a Lead Consultant during and after the stay, Ayurvedic therapies, personal yoga, daily hydrotherapy and an Ayurvedic diet; a 21-night Panchakarma offers a longer, three-stage cleanse with the same consultations.
On the evidence. Rest, yoga, daily movement, a plant-rich diet and time away from alcohol are good for anyone. Ayurvedic cleansing has little rigorous research behind it, and purges, enemas and herbal preparations need caution.
Setting: The Himalayan foothills above Rishikesh, on a hundred-acre palace estate of forest, gardens and historic buildings including the Viceregal Palace. The estate is spread across a hillside, so expect stairs and slopes.

A Panchakarma house on the Moselle that takes only Ayurveda guests, with cures of nine nights to nearly five weeks.
Ayurveda Parkschlösschen is a hotel in its own park in a side valley of the Moselle near Traben-Trarbach that has taken only Ayurveda programme guests since the early 1990s. Its Panchakarma programmes, 9, 13, 20 or 34 nights, are in its words meant to harmonize body, mind and soul, with an Ayurvedic assessment, an individual therapy plan, interim consultations, synchronous massages, special treatments including internal bastis, nutrition and lifestyle counselling, daily yoga, meditation and lectures, and thermal baths.
On the evidence. Rest, oil massage, yoga, a vegetarian diet without alcohol or coffee and time away from daily pressure are pleasant and sensible. Rigorous research on Panchakarma is scarce, the bastis are enemas with the risks of any bowel cleanse, and claims that it releases toxins are not supported by evidence.

The programme page does not say; ask, and skip it if it is an ionic foot bath.

Medically supervised fasting of ten nights to four weeks above Lake Constance, with doctors, laboratory tests and a nurse every morning.
Buchinger Wilhelmi stands high above Lake Constance at Überlingen and continues the therapeutic fasting method of its founder, Dr Otto Buchinger, with a sister clinic in Marbella. Stays of 10 to 28 nights begin with a digestive rest day, continue with fasting days on freshly prepared vegetable consommé and fruit juice and end with gradual refeeding, with a doctor's examination, comprehensive laboratory tests, two doctor's consultations a week, a nurse's check every morning, daily group exercise and relaxation, and talks on nutrition, medicine and psychology.
On the evidence. Supervised fasting is the safest way to fast for several days; most early weight loss is water, and long-term benefits depend on what you eat afterwards. An observational study of 1,422 guests at the clinic (Wilhelmi de Toledo and colleagues, PLoS One 2019) reported falls in weight and blood pressure and side effects in under 1%, without a control group. Fasting does not speed up the body's own detox, and bowel cleansing has no evidence of benefit.
Setting: A hillside at Überlingen high above Lake Constance, looking over the forested shores to Mainau Island and the snow-capped Alps, with a sister clinic in the hills above Marbella on the Costa del Sol.

FAQ:
Is it a detox programme?
It is medically supervised therapeutic fasting; the clinic does not sell a programme called detox, and fasting does not speed up the body's own detox.
Is there bowel cleansing?
At Lake Constance a nurse gives intestinal cleansing every second fasting day; the Marbella package page does not list it, so ask the Marbella clinic.
Who should not fast?
Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, underweight or with an eating disorder, and anyone whose medicines have not been reviewed by their own doctor.
